Did you know that rosacea is not a disorder of the skin, but a disorder of the gut which manifests itself on your face. It is an inflammation on your face that is mirror image of the inflammation that is going on in your body.
I have what the doctors call a mild case of rosacea. I was prescribed a product called Metro gel. Metro gel is really expensive ($300 per tube) and it does not work. In my case it calms my rosacea a bit and makes it mild enough so it can be hidden by makeup. I chose to use a more natural approach to controlling my problem. I wash my face with coconut oil and dab on tea tree oil. This has worked for me and I was ok with the results. Then…….. the holidays arrived. My holiday season was wonderful, but stressful. I was having a great time. A glass of wine here, a glass of wine there. We went to Chicago and, of course, I had to have deep dish pizza ( it was delicious!!!!).. Deep dish pizza is loaded with cheese and wheat, ingredients I usually avoid. Of course, as the holiday season progressed I certainly had a taste here and there, sooooooo my sugar consumption was much higher than normal. With all these indulgences my belly was certainly more rumbly than normal, but I thought it would all go back to normal as soon as the holidays ended.
Well, the holidays ended and I woke up right after New Year’s Eve and my face was on fire. It was not only red, but swollen and I had little red veins everywhere. I was mortified. I did not want to leave the house. I really did not want anyone to see me. Of course, not only was my face on fire, so was my belly. I was in the bathroom 3,4,5 or more times a day.
I sought the advice of the doctor. More metro gel, a prescription for diarrhea. Blood work came back fine, nothing is wrong. This is just something I have to live with. I knew I had to take matters into mo own hands or I was going to be a monster for the rest of my life. This was not an option I was okay with.
So I skipped the metro get and did not fill the other prescription and embarked on a big time anti inflammatory diet.
I truly eliminated all dairy and wheat. I started to eat avocados and berries, pasture-raised eggs, grass-fed meats, greens, greens and more greens, lots of pro and pre biotic foods, no cheating!!!!!!
I added a big gun probiotic supplement (Prescript-Assist), L-Gluathione, and Olive Leaf extract to my regime.
I am pleased to report that both my gut and my face are much, much better. I will continue on this path for at least another month.
I put together the following recipe for a grab and go breakfast. It is chock full of anti-inflammatory foods and it tasted delicious! Give it a try and let me know what you think.
Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie
1 heaping cup of frozen organic berries (blueberries, blackberries and raspberries)
- I scoop if gelatin (Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides)
- 1 small or 1/2 large avocado
- 1 cup almond milk
- I TBS MCT oil ( such as coconut)
- 1/2 handful chopped nuts ( walnuts/ almonds)
Put all ingredients into a blender and whip it up. This will keep you full and sharp for hours. Enjoy xoxo
